Nail polish, water damage and lifting veneers all needed to be repaired on this marquetry table. We carefully re-glued the veneers with traditional glues and methods, in keeping with the age of the table. The nail polish was delicately removed, water damage repaired and the table was french polished.
The carvings were in an extremely advanced state of decay. After consultation with Te Puia, NZ Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, who originally produced the carvings, we arrived at a restoration plan. This required the removal of all rotten material, replacing it with new Totara wood, and carving it to reinstate the original design, matching the carver’s style.
